“My future is bright, no drugs in sight!” was the Wallace Middle School Red
Ribbon theme this year. Students, faculty, and staff all enjoyed daily dress up
themes during the weeklong event. The themes this year were Red-Y for Red
Ribbon Week (wear RED), Follow Your Dreams – Don’t Do Drugs (dress as your
dream career), Senior Citizen Day – We’ll Live to a Ripe Old Age Because We’re
Drug Free! (dress like you are 100 years old), Look to Your Future Without Drugs!
(dress as BBQ dads and soccer moms), and TEAM UP Against Drugs! (wear your
favorite sports team gear or show your Trojan Pride). Each homeroom class also
competed in a friendly door decorating contest using drug-free themes.
Red Ribbon Week came into existence after the tragic death of Drug Enforcement
Special Agent, Kiki Camarena. Camarena was abducted, tortured, and brutally
murdered while in Mexico investigating drug traffickers. Friends and family
started the movement to honor him by wearing red ribbons. The red ribbon is now
the symbol of the fight against drug abuse.
